Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve

Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve

Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve

On a clear day the trail will offer you a magnificent view over the vast stretches of the Karoo and the Mountains and valleys of the Cederberg. Look for detail and you will find some of the very rare reptiles and birds of this area. In certain areas you are sure to see some game from the small steenbok to the largest Eland and cheeky baboon. If you are very lucky you might even see some caracal or mountain leopard.

From the middle of August to middle November you will normally find lots of flowers, a paradise for botanists and nature lovers. Summer months may be very hot with very little or no shade. Winter months may vary from mild to very cold with frost and even snow on high lying areas. Temperatures also vary greatly from the high lying to the low lying camping sites with the latter generally ±8 °C warmer.

The route is over 100km long in total and it is best to travel together with another vehicle. Normally you won’t do all the sections of the road and therefore one night is sufficient. If you really want to enjoy nature however - you can stay as long as you like. If you start from Kagga Kamma reception, the route slowly descends from 3800 ft above sea level to ± 1200feet in the Ceres Karoo. It is mostly quite relaxing but there are a few very steep sections.

Swartrug camp Close to the swimming pool and ± 1˝km from the Restaurant, curios shop and bar (with satellite TV). Up to ±10 vehicles. Flush toilets & washbasins. R60 per person per night

Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve

This route in the Hex River Mountains, which climbs from the Erfdeel farm homestead at 1300m to 2240m, is probably the highest 4x4 route above sea-level in the Western Cape. There are views down the terrifying Groothoek Gorge on one side and down on one of the few skiing areas in South Africa on the other side.

This route should be regarded as more of a spectacularly scenic drive than a 4x4 challenge, the exception being wet and snow conditions.

4x4 Skills required:
There is a little bit of loose gravel at the start of the route, but most novices should be able to handle the trail. However this could become a 5-star route should there be snow - so phone beforehand. This trail is normally a 3 out of 5 trail and the trail is slightly more difficult than a moderate trail. A little bit of experience is required and your vehicle needs to have low range.

If you do not have your own 4X4 you could always be driven up in a Bedford 5 ton 4x4 truck. For more information and to book, phone in advance.
