History
of the Old Toll House
Michell's Pass was first
built by Andrew Geddes Bain between 1846 and 1848.
The Old Toll House was built in 1848 when the Pass was officially opened.
Michell's Pass, as main road to the north, was used by travellers, farmers,
transport riders travelling via Ceres to the diamond fields.
The Toll House was the paypoint for these travellers and the fee was 3 pence per
wheel for wagons/vehicles, 2 pence per transport animal and a halfpence per
sheep, goat or pig. A year after the Toll House was built the first 20 plots
were sold in Ceres.
The Toll House was confirmed in 1972 as a national monument. Next to the
Toll House is a stone pillar - a remnant of the original gate.
The Toll House is still guarding Michell's Pass and weary travellers can
nowadays stop for refreshments and traditional light meals at the Toll House
restaurant, built behind the Toll House.
